Yoga in the Park

Free classes every Tuesday at Noon in June, July and August!
Prescott Park in Portsmouth, NH

In 2005, Seacoast yoga teachers collaborated to bring their collective passion for yoga outside to our beautiful harbor town with five free, outdoor classes. Since then, we have offered fourteen free, public classes every summer in the stunning Prescott Park. 

The power of collaboration was born that summer in Prescott Park and it is this mutual respect between all teachers on the Seacoast that brings power to work we do here at SATYA. Please join us for free classes every Tuesday at Noon in June, July and August in Prescott Park on the waterfront in Portsmouth, NH.

Bring a yoga mat or beach towel on which to practice. Meet at the Whale Statue. Sunglasses, sunscreen and hats are recommended as these classes are held outside, in full sun. In case of rain, classes are cancelled. Stay updated to cancellations on our Facebook page.  

Meet The 2017 Teachers...

  • Vice President of SATYA, Sara Curry has been organizing Yoga in the Park since four visionary yoga teachers took her up on her idea to bring free yoga to Seacoast residents in the summer in 2005.

    Sara Curry is trained in the therapeutic method of Bikram Yoga with a focus on alignment, yoga therapy, and useful biomechanics. Each class with Sara focuses on using yoga as a tool to improve health, fitness, and well-being.

    Sara is the co-founder of the Sober Yogis program bringing together therapeutic sobriety treatment and yoga to enhance recovery.

  • Lona Kovacs has been a yoga teacher in the Seacoast since 2000 and has been teaching for over 20 years. Her primary discipline is traditional Ashtanga Yoga and has taught an All Levels Ashtanga yoga class at Yoga in the Park nearly every year since its inception. She founded Green Lotus Yoga Studio, School of Ashtanga Yoga in Dover, NH, which closed in 2016. Lona is currently on sabbatical from teaching, but volunteers whenever asked and continues to see private clients for yoga therapy. She is focusing her studies in Buddhism and becoming ordained in the Triratna Buddhist Community, located at Portsmouth Buddhist Center, Portsmouth, NH. She is very much looking forward to teaching this summer and seeing old friends and new faces at Yoga In the Park!

  • Kimberly Dahlmann has been a student of Yoga and Meditation for over 21 years and a teacher for 17 years. She has studied with many master teachers of yoga around the world and is a dedicated practitioner and teacher of the Ashtanga Yoga lineage as taught by Sri. K Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India.

    As a teacher of yoga, Kimberly brings compassion, integrity and sensitivity into the classroom. With a strong, foundational emphasis on alignment, asana and yogic philosophy, Kimberly weaves together the deeper layers and energetics of practice as she intuitively guides students with strong hands on adjustments and clear communication. Kimberly inspires students to work with deep focus and intensity and to penetrate a deeper awareness within, as they study and explore the interior and exterior alignment of their own bodies.

    Kimberly is the owner and director of Yoga East in Kittery, Maine.

  • Jonas Zev
    Jonas Zev

    Jonas Zev began his full time yoga teaching in 1997. He co-founded YogaEast in 2002 and most recently co-founded Zev Yoga from 2009-2016.His main yogic influences are traditional Ashtanga Yoga and Ayurvedic medicine. Through his diverse experiences of teaching over 10,000 classes, Jonas Zev has creatively adapted practices to make them universally accessible while maintaining a strong emphasis on utilizing functional movement to maximize the bodies ability to breath more deeply and freely.
    Currently, Jonas Zev and his wife Amylyn have co-created Shilo Farm eco lodge & retreat center in Eliot, Maine where he spends most of his time teaching yoga, serving guests and caring for the many animals that inhabit their homestead.

  • Michelle has been practicing yoga since 2003 and teaching since 2006.  She is an ERYT200 yoga instructor registered through Yoga Alliance and is Yoga 4 Cancer teacher certified. She is the Founder and Director of the Yoga and Cancer Program that offers free and low cost Yoga and Cancer classes on the Seacoast of NH and Southern Maine area. This program is supported by SATYA (Seacoast Area Teachers of Yoga in Action) a 501c(3) non-profit organization with a mission to increase access to therapeutic yoga for at-risk and vulnerable populations. Michelle is an active board member. Whether Michelle is teaching a strong vinyasa style yoga or a Yoga and Cancer class, she teaches with compassion and specific instruction that leads her students to a feeling of exhilaration, peace and inner awareness.

  • Heather Campbell is a 200hr E-RYT. Heather teaches and practices yoga regularly and is always seeking to learn and evolve in both. She believes strongly in the benefits of a regular asana practice along with pranayama and meditation. She also believes that yoga has no boundaries and that people of all ages,body types, and backgrounds can reap these benefits equally. She is passionate about yoga’s ability to help us heal from injury, trauma, stress,depression and anxiety, And has witnessed some amazing transformations first hand, including within her own journey. Heather’s main goal when she's teaching yoga is to make it accessible to all and for her students to leave her classes feeling empowered, confident, and at peace. Heather is the owner of Bending Bodhi Yoga in downtown Dover.

  • Darcy Specker
    Darcy Specker

    Darcy Specker began her yoga practice over a decade ago. She discovered the many benefits of a yoga practice, while pregnant with her first child. Inspired to share the gift of yoga to others, she took her 200 hour training at Yoga on York in 2010. Darcy has been teaching Vinyasa Yoga (breath to movement) at her studio, Cider Hill Yoga, since then. She celebrates 5 years of teaching this summer! Darcy brings an authentic warmth and nurturing to her classes. She loves to offer yoga to everyone- from the wee little ones to the young at heart. Her current passion is an invigorating practice with a healthy dose of Restorative yoga.

  • David is a 13 year Army Veteran who served in Iraq and is co-owner of Yoga on York in York Maine. Yoga gave him a way to strengthen and calm his mind, body and soul. Always “matter of fact” and never graceful in any yoga pose his classes are fun, challenging and focus on strength, mindfulness and patience. With a balance of poses and laughter, David’s classes have something for everyone. David is a 500 hour RYT.

  • Lana Vogestad
    Lana Vogestad

    Lana Vogestad teaches at Bikram Yoga Portsmouth, in the Yoga and Cancer Program with SATYA at Yoga East in Kittery, and at Cliff House in Ogunquit. Before moving to the seacoast a couple years ago, she taught in Atlanta, the Netherlands and Iceland for several years, where she returns to lead workshops. Lana, 500 RYT/200 E-RYT, is a senior Barkan Method of Hot Yoga teacher and is certified in the Barkan Method Level I, II and III. In addition to training with Jimmy Barkan and has had extensive training in Bikram Yoga going back to 2000, she has also studied with leading teachers from other yoga disciplines. Whether she teaches hot yoga or vinyasa, she provides insightful and clear alignment instruction, as well as guides her students to have a personal journey to delve inward with compassion.   • AJ Govani & Shelly Grande
    AJ Govani & Shelly Grande

    Finding happiness in movement and connection, AJ is an international yoga teacher, holistic fitness educator, and creative. She has been guiding people through movement and well-being for over a decade. AJ's journey has brought her living, learning, and practicing in diverse places, and with teachers from around the world.
    Her travels and studies in various modalities are the source of inspiration and contribution to both her teaching and lifestyle. A Co-Founder and Creator of Wild Vibes (a celebration of yoga, music, and art through retreats and an annual festival that supports SATYA & PURESA HUMANITARIAN FOUNDATION), AJ is incredibly passionate about bringing people together in unique and uplifting ways. She regularly partners with local businesses to bring yoga into unique spaces throughout the Seacoast. She hopes to spark within a sense of, self compassion, curiosity, and connection, and always weaves in a lot of heart, funk and feel good vibes into her classes.
    Shelly Grande is an international yoga teacher, Reiki Master, and Ayurvedic Body Therapist. She connected with yoga while living in Australia and found home on her mat when she entered Yoga East. Inspired by early morning Mysore and her teacher Kimberly Dahlmann's ability to hold space for her students, she traveled to Maui to immerse in teacher training with Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane. Owner of Grande Wellness, she whole-heartedly believes in the infinite healing abilities of Yoga, Reiki and Ayurveda. She is passionate about sharing the modalities that continuously help her ease her mind, release her fears and connect with her true essence of love and joy. Her classes are a practice of self love inspired by Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Yin, and cosmic astrology. She believes in taking the qualities we strive for on the mat - things like honesty, integrity, and compassion - off the mat and into our world. You can often find Shelly writing in the sand or going up-side-down to feel right-side-up. You can also find her teaching at Yogasmith, 3 Bridges, on the beach, sharing collaborative workshops and at Village Arts Gallery. Follow her on Facebook to stay up-to-date with magical offerings.   • Nancy Garnhart
    Nancy Garnhart

    Nancy Garnhart, co-owner of Yoga in ME in Eliot, Maine, first started a serious yoga practice in 1999 to ease the stress of parenting three young children, running a household and being a full time graduate student. She was hooked by a vigorous style of yoga that helped bring the craziness in her head down to a dull roar and create a sense of calm in her life. The physical benefits of yoga were also unmistakable. Recurring incapacitating lower back pain disappeared and postpartum urinary incontinence vanished. Nancy uses the practice of yoga in all areas of her life. She endeavors to be mindful and compassionate whether she is teaching yoga, doing massage, walking in the woods, playing with her grandchildren or gardening. Nancy is a 500 hour graduate of The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute with Beryl Bender Birch. She enjoys teaching a Power Yoga practice and modifying her classes to be accessible to everyone. She especially loves to teach brand new beginner classes, classes for "Boomers" and a weekly free yoga class for veterans.

  • Jennifer Desrosiers wants to live in a world filled with endless miles of twisty mountain bike trails, french press coffee, luxurious car camping, and effortless handstands. As a certified holistic health and wellness coach, 200 RYT yoga instructor, and self-proclaimed real food junkie, Jennifer believes great health is a synergistic balance of a healthy diet, tons of self-love, passionate relationships, and powerful movement. Jennifer is the founder of Laney & Lu, a vibrant food community cafe and organic juice bar, located in downtown Exeter, NH and co-founder of Wild Adventurous Life, a wellness and lifestyle media company. Yoga, for Jen, embodies the true spirit of adventure, and her classes are energetic, alignment-focused, and powerfully challenging for yogis at any level. She encourages her students to practice with an open mind and an open heart.

  • Sarah Jones, E-ryt 200, was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. She was trained in Vinyasa flow 200+ hr. Her practice started in 1999 with Anusara Yoga where she feels the root of her teaching comes from. She studies many different styles of yoga including Iyengar, Ashtanga, Kundalini and Anusara. She believes in balancing your practice with masculine and feminine, muscular energy and organic energy, mind and body as well as heart opening. Her personal philosophy is to go upside down every day! She loves to challenge her students to not only to try something new and exciting physically but to open up your mental and emotional possibilities to what the hour or so holds for you. Sarah believes yoga is a way to create a controlled, confrontational situation so that when you get out into the world, you have the resources to breath and realign your body and mind in a way that will handle any stress. Most importantly, Sarah loves to "play" and experiment with new and fun postures. She was also trained by Miniyogis, in Santa Monica, CA to teach kids yoga.   • Following a 35 year career as an early childhood/special education teacher, Marie began an exploration of yoga and mindfulness. After receiving her 200 hr. certification through Yoga Alliance, she acquired a 95hr. yoga alliance children certification. She presently works as a ChildLight Yoga teacher in various settings. Committed to promoting feelings of safety and enjoyment for her students, Marie believes that encouragement and positive reinforcement in the practice of yoga and mindfulness can positively impact the student, family, classroom, community and society as a whole. Within a framework of respect for all students, compassionate communication, and joyful exploration, students are taught fundamental life skills that are immediately available for daily use.
